APBA Pro Football Replays and More!

Featured

I’ve used the APBA Football Master game to replay several seasons.  The Master game provides the “ebb and flow” of an actual contest and allows the “coach” the opportunity to deploy multiple personnel packages to mirror today’s game or the single platoon system of yesteryear. On numerous occasions, I’ve matched team records and have come extremely close to replicating team and individual statistics.

My original purpose for creating this blog was solely to present my current and previous replays, offer “method of play” alternatives, share innovations, provide tools for evaluating individual cards, post links and informational tips to assist with preparing for and conducting season replays.

Of course, season replays will always remain the focal point, however, it’s my goal and ambition to cover all aspects of APBA Football ranging from historical, solo tournaments, league play and the finer points of Face-to-Face play. To accomplish this, I’ve enlisted the help of the finest minds in all APBA Football. My team of authors have been former card makers for the game company, innovators, league commissioner, writers for the APBA Journal, and APBA Hall of Famers.

Site authors are Mr. Mark Zarb, Mr. Ray Dunlap, Mr. Dave Urban, Mr. Greg Wells, Mr. Phil Molloy, Mr. Dan Flynn, Mr. Doug Reese and Mr. Scott Griffin.

I’ve created a quick reference site directory to aid visitors searching for the 20 most popular topics not found in the upper site menu (Home, Method of Play, YPC Ratings, etc).

1997 Game 200 (Week 15) New England at Jacksonville

Patriots take down the Jags in overtime

In a rematch of last year’s AFC Championship game, the New England Patriots and the Jacksonville Jaguars had to battle into overtime to decide a winner.

With the Patriots leading 23-20 with 15 seconds to go in regulation, the Jaguars miraculously blocked Tom Tupa’s punt and got the ball at the Patriot 25-yard line. After a completion, the Jaguars settled for a game-tying 30-yard Mike Hollis field goal to send the game into overtime.

On the first offensive play of overtime, Patriot DE Mark Wheeler sacked Jaguar QB Mark Brunell and caused him to fumble. LB Todd Collins hopped on the ball at the Jaguar 18-yard line! After a couple of running plays, Adam Vinatieri lined up and banged home a game-winning 37-yard field goal. The Patriots escaped with a 26-23 victory.

The Patriots were without their top running back Curtis Martin, and it showed. The Patriots rushed for just 28 yards on the day and had to rely on the arm of QB Drew Bledsoe, who finished 19 of 34 passing with 292 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Bledsoe connected on a 42-yard Keith Byars touchdown and a 25-yarder to WR Shawn Jefferson.

As for the Jaguars, they got a huge game from QB Brunell. He threw for 371 yards on 26 of 41 passing with two touchdowns and an interception. He threw both touchdowns to Jimmie Smith, who caught 14 passes for 201 yards. WR Keenan McCardell had eight receptions for 138 yards on the day.

The Patriots are now 11-3 and have the lead in the AFC East. If the Jets lose later in the day, the Patriots will win the division. If they win any of their next two games against the Steelers and the Dolphins, then they will win the division. As for the Jaguars, their disappointing season continues as they are now 5-9. They will finish the season on the road in their final two games against Buffalo and Oakland.

1997 Game 199 (Week 15) Green Bay at Tampa Bay

Packers sweep the Buccaneers

The World Champion Green Bay Packers flexed their muscles Sunday afternoon in Houlihan Stadium as they swept the season series with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, 24-9, and are now one win away from their third consecutive NFC Central crown.

The Packers’ defense abused the Bucs and held them to just 147 total yards on the day. All-Pro defensive end Reggie White sacked Buccaneer QB Trent Dilfer and knocked him out of the game early in the third quarter. Then Steve Walsh came in the game, and he immediately intercepted by rookie FS Darren Sharper, who returned the interception 79 yards for the game-clinching touchdown.

Brett Favre and the Packers offense rolled up 388 yards of total offense but struggled doing it. Favre threw for 244 yards on 22 of 36 passing with two touchdowns but was intercepted twice.  WR Antonio Freeman caught seven passes for 87 yards and two touchdowns.

Dorsey Levens had a big day against the tough Buccaneer defense. He rushed for 104 yards on 27 carries. Altogether, the Packers rushed for 148 yards on the day.

The Packers (13-1) will try to win the NFC North crown next Sunday in Carolina, while the Buccaneers (9-5) will travel to the Big Apple to take on the Jets.
